The truth is there is no one size fits all Broadband deal and the best broadband deal is the one that fits your needs.  You need to think about what you need and what you want to include in your package, whether it be broadband only, TV as well or Home phone.  Once you have a good idea, then you can use our tool to drill down and find the best broadband deal for you.  There are lots of broadband choices out there, so let’s take a look at some of the things to consider.

How fast does your broadband need to be?

Broadband comes in various different types. Those mainly being ADSL and Fibre Optic. Let’s take a look at them in a bit more detail below.

Standard ADSL Broadband

This type of broadband is at the lower end of the speed scale and you will averagely get speeds of around 10 or 11mbps. Whilst this option is the cheapest broadband type offered from many providers and is ideal if your internet usage isn’t going to be that much, or your household isn’t that busy. If you’re a serious web user though ypou should consider fibre optic broadband deals.

Fibre Optic Broadband

Fibre Optic broadband the next step up to ADSL and is normally a lot faster than the standard ADSL broadband.  The difference being that internet is delivered by Fibre Optic cables and at an amazingly fast rate compared to ADSL, which means the data transfer is much quicker and it’s capable of handling a lot more speed. This option is ideal for heavier browsing, email, streaming, gaming and connecting multiple devices to it without choking out the connection. Fibre Optic is sometimes names “Superfast” broadband, and is normally classified as speeds over 25mbps.

Should I get broadband only?

Now there’s a question.  You can do, but it normally is more expensive than getting it with a phone line. Most providers deliver broadband via the phone line which means you’d need one for those.  There are also only a few suppliers that offer broadband without the phone line, Virgin being one of them, but like we say, it does work out more expensive.

How many people will be using the connection?

It’s a good idea to think about how heavily you’re going to be using your broadband too.  If it’s light use by one or two people then standard ADSL will probably be fine, but if you’re a bigger household and multiple people will be connecting and using multiple devices at once you might want to consider fibre optic broadband. This will deliver a much faster and stable connection where needed, which is perfect for streaming, browsing, gaming and much more.

Can I switch and keep my phone number?

You can indeed if you’re not moving house. When you simply switch supplier you can opt to keep your number.  If you’re moving just around the corner for example, then it should also be fine, but if it’s a big move to a different area code, then most likely not.

Should I get TV too?

It makes sense to bundle your broadband, phone and TV together. It not only works out cheaper in most cases, but is a lot less hassle too. You can deal with one provider for everything, and have just the one bill to worry about. The providers offering most bundle deals are Sky, Virgin Media, BT and TalkTalk.
